Isn’t this such a great cover? Curious what DEAD AND BREAKFAST is about?

Despite living in Key West his whole life, 18-year-old Liam Breyer is a skeptic of the supernatural until a vengeful spirit, murdered fifty years ago, nearly drowns him in a swimming pool. Luckily help arrives in the form of pretty — albeit homesick — ghost whisperer Autumn Abernathy, whose newly-divorced mom has dragged her to the island to live and work at the Cayo Hueso, a haunted bed and breakfast.

Although they initially mistrust each other, Autumn and Liam team up to solve the decades-old mystery. But on an island where every third resident is a ghost, dealing with an unstable spirit has deadly consequences. If Liam and Autumn don’t unmask the killer soon, they’re likely to become Key West’s latest haunted attraction.

Doesn’t this sound great? I love a good mystery AND a ghost story! You can purchase DEAD AND BREAKFAST (I love that title!) here!

And now Kimberly would like to share two inspiration boards with you! First, a word from the lovely author:

Greetings, YA Scavengers!

I’m so glad you could stop by on this leg of the tour. My bonus content for you are two inspiration boards for my YA paranormal mystery, Dead and Breakfast. D&B is the story of two 17-year-olds who try to put a vengeful spirit to rest by solving her murder. It’s the first in a trilogy and was inspired by a vacation to Key West that my husband and I took over four years ago. We had been touring the island when I began jotting down notes, realizing that there was a story in these details.

Key West is really an unusual island. It has pastel-colored Victorian houses with intricate lattice work, double balconies, and turrets. Feral roosters, who are protected by the local government, roam the streets. Hemingway’s six-toed cats have procreated in abundance. Key West City Cemetery is a striking metaphor for the island as it’s both creepy and whimsical. Epitaphs read, “I told you I was sick.” Scooters are the preferred form of transportation, followed by bicycles, and one’s feet. The humidity is so thick and oppressive, it’s practically corporeal. And every October, people flock to the island for Fantasy Fest, a ten-day bacchanalian party where clothing is very optional.

The first inspiration board is made up of photos I took on vacation. I didn’t have a smartphone back then so the photos are a little gray as they were taken with an old digital camera. The second board are photos I collected online (royalty free) and are much brighter. The large Victorian on the bottom is Hemingway’s house. As an author, being in the same place where Ernest Hemingway penned his novels is a surreal and inspiring experience.

I hope you enjoy this little virtual trip to Key West and I wish you luck in the hunt. If you’d like to keep up with my writing, including getting notified when Book 2, Ghost and Found, is released, please sign up for my newsletter.

Best,

KGG

All set? Then let’s get this party started!

Today I’d like to welcome author Jennifer Tressen to the blog!

jennifer tressen

Jennifer Tressen is a wife, mother and writer. A former actor, she spent nearly ten years in the entertainment industry appearing in commercials, print ads and television shows. It was her love of storytelling that pushed her to the other side of the camera and sent her to film school at Chapman University. Although she entered as a Cinematography major, Jennifer graduated with a degree in Screenwriting after a single required screenwriting class forever changed her path. She found a passion for writing she had forgotten in her childhood. Everything she learned about screenwriting and especially storytelling she attributes to her mentor, the late Blake Snyder.

After several years of writing and editing for producers and other screenwriters her curiosity led her into writing novels. As a huge fan of Young Adult and New Adult literature this is where her pen tends to lead her. However, she does have plans to release a few middle grade fiction and adult novels in the future.

Jennifer is also the current series writer for a soon to be released animated children’s television show ‘Max and Wrigley.’

Castle in the Air - High Resolution

Jennifer’s book featured today is Castle in the Air. Here’s a little bit about it:

The Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas has been called “America’s Most Haunted Hotel” largely because of the events of the 1930s when Dr. Norman Baker ran a “cancer treatment hospital” which he called his “Castle in the Air.”

Follow the fictionalized story of Clara, the young, unwed pregnant niece of Dr. Baker who comes to help at the cancer center in exchange for room and board and finds things aren’t quite what they appear to be. Caring for an ill young boy at the center she feels her maternal instincts kick in – something is definitely not right at her uncle’s hospital. But what? Will she be able to piece together the clues in time to save herself and the boy? Or will she be forever doomed to reside in the Castle in the Air, where once you check in…you never leave.

This one sounds spooky! It’s a perfect read for the fall. You can purchase Castle in the Air here, and check out this exclusive, deleted scene Jennifer is sharing with us today!

“Do you believe in ghosts?” Samuel asked. His tiny hand wrapped around a single jack and caught the ball midair with ease.

“My grandmother does,” Clara replied. “And I think my mom did.”

“But do you?” Samuel swooped up two jacks and the ball without even looking.

“I don’t know,” Clara said, a rush of sadness filling her heart and pressing down the already surging weight of her pregnant stomach.

“You should,” he said. “She watches you all the time.”

“Who?” Clara could feel the little hairs on the back of her neck lifting. Her last haircut had been at the hands of her shaky grandmother and she knew long before looking in a mirror that uneven lines and missing clumps were her fate.

“You know.”

Clara studied the boy further. He had the beginnings of frown lines, the markings of entry into adulthood and middle age, not that of adolescence. He was far beyond his single digit years, hidden in the body of a young boy was the mystery of a man time had forgotten.

“Who, Samuel? Who is watching me?” Clara tried to get a response but he was too focused on his game of jacks. Yet when it was time to collect six he stopped, allowing the ball to fall to the ground.

Clara could feel the presence. Turning slowly she saw the frail outline of a woman standing beside the window scribbling her name with her fingertip on the glass pane.

“Theodora?” Clara said softly.

“They are….” Samuel said quietly. “We all are.” Just then the ball began to roll away on its own, out the doorway and into the hall. Theodora turned to look at it. Then her eyes lifted from the ground to the little boy seated a short distance away.

“It’s time,” Samuel said.

“Time for what?” Clara asked. “Are you done playing?”

“Yes. The game is done.”

“Now what shall we do?”

“Prepare.”

Samuel’s single word reply brought on a coldness not typically felt in the early weeks of summer. Clara could feel its reach into the depth of her bones. This chill, its grip, it was familiar.

“What are we preparing for Samuel?” she asked.

“Death,” he replied.

Thanks for this awesome scene, Jennifer!

Don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of signed books by me, Jennifer, and more! To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is 12. Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on the indie team and you’ll have all the secret code to enter for the grand prize!

Today I’d like to introduce author Janna Jennings!
janna
Janna is a Colorado based YA author who loves a good fairy tale. She’s married to her own real life Prince Charming, and will usually admit to being mom of three, including her incorrigible middle child, Benny. Besides wrangling her kids she can be found doing some therapeutic baking, dreaming of the ocean, and of course, curling up with a good book.
B1 Grimm Legacy
Janna is the author of A Grimm Legacy, the first book in the Grimm Tales series.

Enchanted castles and charming princes thought to exist only in stories come to life in this classically twisted fairy tale that combines the timeless quality of folktales with the challenges of the modern world.

The woods of Elorium appear ordinary to Andi… until the birds start to talk and elves answer doors. Whisked out of her world along with three strangers, Andi finds herself the reluctant guest of the perplexing millionaire, Mr. Jackson, a stranger willing to help get them home, but who’s keeping secrets of his own.

Discovering unexpected family connections to this fairy tale land, the group must rely on each other as they dodge evil fairies and battle giants intent on keeping them in Elorium.

Faced with characters short on whimsy and bent towards treachery, Andi, Quinn, Fredrick and Dylan are forced into fairy tale roles to find the home. But in Elorium, happily ever after is never guaranteed.

I love fairy tales, and this one sounds great! You can purchase A Grimm Legacy here!
Today Janna is sharing an exclusive sneak peek at her upcoming book, A Grimm Curse.

Cynthia crept past the weed-choked flowerbeds. A few roses struggled to bloom amid the neglect, but the place looked sad and forgotten. A small man-made pond sat in the shade of the near by pine trees. This is where the Wellington property ended and the forest began. Water still trickled into the pond, keeping the surface clear. Wild grasses had grown up along the edges, but it made the little spot look more natural, probably what the frog was used to.

Cynthia sat on a rusting wrought iron bench and reached into her pocket, freeing the frog. His skin felt tacky and rough. He’d been out of the water too long. She lowered him into the water.

“There you go.”

She stood up to leave. The frog seemed to shake itself out of a stooper. It kicked several times, propelling itself across the surface of the water with the awkward hind kick particular only to frogs. Rolling on its back, it sighed and said, “Ahh much better.”

Cynthia blinked hard and sat back down on the bench. The frog stroked back to her and hopped to the edge of the little pond where it sat half in, half out of the water.

“You’re not a princess, are you?” Beyond the harsh, throaty quality of its voice that was not quite human, the frog was male and hopeful.

Cynthia opened her mouth to reply and popped it back closed again. It was one thing to understand birds. Their peeps and trills seemed to translate themselves inside her head. Bird vocabulary was limited and repetitive. Frankly, they weren’t overly bright. It was not like talking to another person.

She’d heard the occasional rumor of talking animals. It wasn’t unheard of in Elorium to get advice from a fox, and there was a fairly famous troupe of singing animals that traveled around, although she had never seen them.

The frog blinked his bulbous eyes and a frown seemed to tug at his wide mouth. “Sorry, I know it can be a bit of a shock. You’ve got a surreal look on your face.”

“No, I—“ Cynthia paused and cleared her throat trying to rearrange her features into something other than stunned. “I understand birds. I just wasn’t expecting—you took me by surprise. That’s all.”

“Birds? I’ve never heard of that before.”

It was strange to watch the creature’s thin, flat lips move and words come out. It was like watching a puppeteer.

“I—“ she decided to steer this strange conversation away from herself. “What were you asking?”

“Oh.” the frog splayed his webbed toes on his right foot. “Are you a princess? I mean, I know you don’t live in a castle, but I thought perhaps you were one in hiding?” The frog had ducked his head and looked up at her out of the top of his eyes like a hopeful boy.

Cynthia felt a smile wanting to tug at her lips. “I’m not. Sorry.”

His face fell.

“I’m Cynthia.” She held out her name like some kind of pitiful offering.

“Remi.” The frog waved a half hearted webbed hand at her and sank with his chin in the water until just his mouth and eyes jutted out.

She waited a second, and when no further information was forthcoming she prodded, “So…”

Remi’s head came up slightly. “How am I a talking frog?” A half grin twisted on his face. “Sorry, this is the longest conversation I’ve had. Most people scream and run. Or try to hit me with things.” He looked up at her with an expression Cynthia couldn’t read. She didn’t know if it was the look or the fact that it was on a frog’s face that was creating the difficulty. Something moved her to bend down and hold out her hand. Remi hesitated just a second before hopping into her palm. The pads on his feet were delicate and damp. She placed him beside her on the bench and waited.

“I haven’t actually tried talking to anyone in awhile, but you seem…” here the frog appeared to be selecting the right words, “like a person to take a chance on.”

“Because I rescued you?”

“I wouldn’t say rescued—“ Remi stammered out.

A brief image came to Cynthia of an abashed young man. That smile wanted to curl her lips up again. Twice in one day. It wasn’t a problem she usually had.

“I’m not saying you didn’t help,” he added. “Can’t deny I’d gotten myself in a pickle. It wasn’t just that.” He’d turned thoughtful. “It was more a feeling you were someone who might understand.”

Look for A Grimm Curse this fall!

Okay, got that? Moving right along, I’d like to introduce Shay Lynam!

shay

Shay was born and raised in a small, rainy town in Washington, but now resides in another quaint, rainy town with her husband and pug-beagle mix, Lucy. When not at work, you can usually find her at home or at her favorite coffee shop, typing away on her newest novel.

And now I’ll let Shay tell you about her upcoming novel!

Hey all!

As your reward for finding me, I want to share my Peter Pan spin-off novel, Never, with you! It isn’t set to come out until November 4th but because you are awesome and participating in this crazy scavenger hunt, I thought you deserved a sneak peek. Also, because I want to get you guys extra excited about Never, I’m going to share a teaser of my book cover. My actual cover reveal isn’t until November 1st so you guys are getting an extremely exclusive first look.

First, a little about Never:

Wynn Harper spends her days trying to blend into the background. This isn’t very easy, especially being the great granddaughter of the late Wendy Darling. Wynn used to love Great Gran’s stories about her adventures in Neverland with Peter Pan and his lost boys, but that’s all they were. Just stories, right? That’s what Wynn keeps telling herself.

But then she meets Peter, the beautiful boy with a voice to match, and when he whisks her off to Neverland, Wynn knows this is no fairy tale. The lost boys are a group of rebellious ex-pirates, young Hook has a soft side, and Peter Pan isn’t as innocent as you might think.

Here’s an exclusive excerpt. When Wynn meets Peter.

“What’s it like in Neverland?” I asked after we had been flying in silence for a while. Peter’s hand tightened more around my own frozen fingers. I couldn’t feel my body anymore. I could’ve been missing both my legs and I wouldn’t even notice until we got to Neverland and I’d discover I was a couple feet shorter.

“Different,” he said looking over to meet my eyes.

“How do you mean?”

I watched as he swiveled his body and was suddenly under me, floating on his back. What would happen if I just let go of his hand? I would collide with him, he could wrap his arms around me and maybe I could lay my head on that soft orange t-shirt. I bet I’d be able to feel the ridges of his chest with my cheek. Something told me there was a body of a seventeen year old god under those clothes. Wow, maybe a dunk in that frigid ocean below would do me some good.

Peter cleared his throat and a smirk appeared on his face. He must have noticed my eyes trailing thoughtfully down his body. “It just is,” he finally said and laid my hand on his shirt so it was flat under his. Yep, I could feel the hard lines of his chest. “You’ll see for yourself soon.”

“Soon?” I asked giving him a confused look. “I thought the saying goes ‘straight on till morning.’ It isn’t even eleven yet.”

Peter tipped his head back so he was looking in the direction we were headed. “Think again.”

I lifted my head and saw the horizon glowing with morning light. The moon was still high and bright, the stars were still shining brilliantly, yet the sky down far ahead was beginning to fade to a pale blue as the sun slowly rose. In the distance I could make out a break in the horizon. Dips and peaks made up of mountains and valleys rose up from the water like a tiny hopeful beat on a heart monitor with a dead line.

Neverland.

And finally, a sneak peek at my beautiful cover, made by Kellie Dennis with Book Cover by Design (bookcoverbydesign.co.uk):
